Frankfurt Airport Information

Frankfurt am Main Airport (IATA: FRA), known in German as Flughafen Frankfurt am Main or Rhein-Main-Flughafen , is Germany's largest airport by passenger movement and is located southwest of the city centre of Frankfurt. It is a major player in Europe- the third busiest airport in Europe, serving the most international destinations. It is a major hub for Lufthansa, Germany's flag-carrier.

Frankfurt airport has strong road and rail connections, making it a transport hub for the greater Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region. There are 2 train stations at the aiport, one for regional and one for longer distance trains.

Opened as The Rhein-Main Airport and Airship Base in 1936. Interestingly, it was initially used as a main base for airships, but this stopped after the Hindenburg disaster in 1937. It was used for military purposes during World War 2 and afterwards for US Airforce contributions to the Berlin Airlift, recommencing flights by Lufthansa in 1955. There are currently plans to add a fourth runway and another terminal to the airport, which currently has 2 main terminals and a dedicated First Class terminal for Lufthansa passengers.
